Dr. Gregory S. Gray, dean of the University Chapel and professor of religion and society, provided the ceremony keynote address. His message, entitled “E = mc2: Excellence Equals Mature Conscientious Scholarship,” challenged students to be accountable for their own academic enterprise.
“Your academic enterprise must be understood as an equivalence formula for excellence. Any scholarship possessing excellence has an equivalent amount of mature conscientious,” noted Gray. “Mature conscientiousness involves the accumulation of knowledge and skills, structure and discipline within a framework of the pursuit of truth in a free environment.”
Following Gray’s message, students named by the dean of their respective colleges and schools as University Scholars students were announced. Students named as University Scholars must be eligible for the university’s annual Honor Roll, be the top-ranking students who have completed at least 90 hours (but no more than 110 hours) in their respective college or school, and show exemplary personal qualities as attested by the dean of their major academic areas. Finally, more than 636 students were named to the university’s annual Honor Roll for the 2017-18 academic year. The Honor Roll list is released during the fall semester, based upon students’ academic performance the preceding school year. The list includes students from all programs who achieved a semester GPA of no less than 3.25 for the academic year during which his/her eligibility is determined, and who have passed at least 12 semester hours each semester.
