Annual Scholarship Convocation honors more than 630 students for academic excellence

On Sunday, Oct. 11, Ƶ honored 636 students for their academic achievement during the 2017-18 academic year as part of its 93rd Annual Scholarship Convocation, which was held in the Gen. Daniel “Chappie” James Arena.

Dr. Gregory S. Gray, dean of the University Chapel and professor of religion and society, provided the ceremony keynote address. His message, entitled “E = mc2: Excellence Equals Mature Conscientious Scholarship,” challenged students to be accountable for their own academic enterprise.

“Your academic enterprise must be understood as an equivalence formula for excellence. Any scholarship possessing excellence has an equivalent amount of mature conscientious,” noted Gray. “Mature conscientiousness involves the accumulation of knowledge and skills, structure and discipline within a framework of the pursuit of truth in a free environment.”

Following Gray’s message, students named by the dean of their respective colleges and schools as University Scholars students were announced. Students named as University Scholars must be eligible for the university’s annual Honor Roll, be the top-ranking students who have completed at least 90 hours (but no more than 110 hours) in their respective college or school, and show exemplary personal qualities as attested by the dean of their major academic areas. This year’s honorees included:

  • Joslyn Miller of the College of Agriculture, Environment and Nutrition Sciences, who is majoring in agribusiness
  • Ashtin Christopher Brown of the Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science, who is majoring in architecture
  • Kiara Janae Carmichael of the College of Arts and Sciences, who is majoring in biology
  • Shange’ S. Outlawof the Andrew F. Brimmer College of Business and Information Science, who is majoring in finance
  • Levirice Hall of the School of Education, who is majoring in elementary education
  • Aamina Dandy of the College of Engineering, who is majoring in chemical engineering
  • Lauren Golsonof the School of Nursing and Allied Health, who is majoring in nursing
  • Mattie A. Wilkinson of the College of Veterinary Medicine, who is majoring in veterinary medicine

The convocation also honored 35 students who qualified during the 2017-18 academic year as Eminent Scholars. To be eligible for this recognition, students must maintain a 4.0 grade point average and meet the criteria for the annual Honor Roll.

Finally, more than 636 students were named to the university’s annual Honor Roll for the 2017-18 academic year. The Honor Roll list is released during the fall semester, based upon students’ academic performance the preceding school year. The list includes students from all programs who achieved a semester GPA of no less than 3.25 for the academic year during which his/her eligibility is determined, and who have passed at least 12 semester hours each semester.
