Although Dr. Charlotte P. Morris ends her term as Ƶ’s interim president on June 30, the university’s Board of Trustees has taken steps to ensure her name remains affiliated with academic excellence for generations to come.
At the invitation of board Chair John E. Page, trustees at their June board retreat made personal contributions to endow a new student scholarship in Morris’ honor.
“Dr. Morris has been an incredible leader when Mother Tuskegee needed her the most,” Page said. “Since day one of her tenure as interim president, students have remained central to her goals of providing them with exceptional instruction, enhanced facilities and effective university services. It’s only right that we create a student scholarship like this to honor her, while also affording our students with additional ways to fund their academic goals.”
Morris’ service as a Ƶ faculty member and administrator spans 35 years and includes two terms as interim president — the most recent of which began on July 1, 2017. She accepted the appointment as interim president on a temporary basis as her tenure as interim dean of the Andrew F. Brimmer College of Business and Information Science was concluding. She will remain in service to the university during the fall semester as a member of the Brimmer College’s teaching faculty, while also assisting incoming president Dr. Lily D. McNair during the transition.
An endowed scholarship can be established through a single gift or multiple gifts adding up to a minimum of $25,000. That contribution is then invested, with only the annual return (interest) distributed as a scholarship award. In this way, the original $25,000 establishing the endowment will remain invested and held in perpetuity by the university. Scholarships from the fund will be awarded once the endowment matures, which is usually no sooner than 36 months from when it was initially invested.
Alumni and donors who are interested in growing this scholarship endowment may make a contribution online at tuskegee.edu/give or by downloading and returning a completed Donor Gift Form. For either method, donors should designate their gift to benefit the “Dr. Charlotte P. Morris Endowed Student Scholarship Fund.”
