Class of 1975 Johnson Haynes Jr., M.D. Originally from Opelika, AL passed away in Mobile, AL on Dec.2, 2022. After graduatingfrom high school in 1971, he entered Tuskegee Institute, where heconcentrated in pre-med studies and pledged the Alpha Phi Alphafraternity. He graduated from medical school at the University of South Alabama in1980 to begin a career as an African-American trailblazer, the first to trainas a resident and a fellow at USA (Univ of South Ala Health). He joined the faculty in 1984 as the firstAfrican-American clinical and basic sciences faculty member. He was adevoted mentor to countless medical students and residents and a tirelessadvocate for more opportunities in medicine for students fromdisadvantaged communities.In September 2022, USA named itssickle cell center, which he headed since 2001, in his honor. The Alpha Phi Alpha Omega service was held at 7 pm on Thur.,December 8, at Small’s Mortuary at 950 S. Broad Street in Mobile.The funeral service was held at 10:30 am on Friday, December 9, at St.Paul’s Episcopal Church at 4051 on Old Shell Road. The burial service washeld at 12 Noon on Sat, Dec. 10, at Garden Hills Cemeteryin Opelika, Al. In 1981 she moved to Trenton, New Jersey and resided there for the next 19 years. In 2000, Mickey retired from the State of New Jersey Department of Agriculture and returned to Oak Ridge. |

She isbest known as the woman in the iconic photo of the “Bloody Sunday” civil rights march. She was gassed and brutally beaten by law enforcement agents at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., on March 7, 1965. She was considered a part of the Tuskegee Airmen Legacy because she became the first female pilot to join theAlabama State's Civil Air Patrol Squadronin 1942, and she was the first black woman in Alabama to earn a pilot's license. |

Billups Died October 28, 2009 Billups, DVM, was director of the Diagnostic Laboratory Services and associate professor of Pathology at the Ƶ College of Veterinary Medicine, Nursing & Allied Health.Billups also served his country admirably as commander of the 422nd Medical Detachment, Rockville, Md. (1985-1989), and retired as Colonel of the United States Army Veterinary Corps, USAR in 1995. He returned to Ƶ to serve his alma mater as Associate Dean for Administration. |
